Matanzas is much more than a beach. In the Navidad district of Chile's O'Higgins Region, it combines coastal scenery, water sports, forest trails, good food and outdoor experiences. It's a great choice for a couples getaway, a family holiday or a weekend away from the city.

If you're planning a visit, here's what to do in Matanzas and around, with ideas for every pace and tips to organise your trip.

1. Enjoy Matanzas beach and its lookouts

The beach is one of the area's main attractions. Walk along the shore, take in the Pacific, watch the riders on the waves or simply enjoy the view.

Another must is the Matanzas lookout (Mirador de Matanzas), perfect for seeing the coast from above and watching the sunset.

Tip: bring a windbreaker, even on sunny days: wind is a constant on this part of the coast.

2. Take a surf lesson

Matanzas is known for its wind and wave conditions. If you've never surfed, use your visit to take a lesson with local instructors.

One option is the OMZ Matanzas surf school, which offers lessons with equipment included. Message us on WhatsApp at +56 9 8475 6735 and we'll help you arrange your lesson.

It's ideal if you want to try something different on holiday. The instructors assess the sea conditions before anyone goes in.

3. Ride through dunes, forest and beach on horseback

One of the most special experiences in the area is a guided horse ride through the landscapes of Matanzas and Pupuya.

The Cabalgatas Beto route combines trails through the trees, dunes, wetlands and a stretch along the sea. It takes about one hour and 20 minutes and can suit beginners, depending on the guide's assessment.

It's best to book ahead. Message us on WhatsApp at +56 9 8475 6735 and we'll help you arrange the ride: times, options for children and weather conditions.

4. Mountain bike or hike at Reserva El Maitén

If you'd rather stay on land, Reserva El Maitén is a great way to explore the local nature.

The park is all about the outdoors, with mountain biking, bike trails and hiking. A good plan if you want to combine exercise and scenery.

If you ride, check the difficulty of each trail and wear the right protective gear. Message us on WhatsApp at +56 9 8475 6735 and we'll help you arrange your visit. More routes and sports on Play.

5. Visit La Boca and try water sports

At La Boca, near the mouth of the Rapel river, you can enjoy the water from a different angle.

Depending on the river and what's on offer, you can ask about kayaking, stand-up paddle and other guided water activities.

Before you go, confirm the meeting point, age requirements and safety conditions. Message us on WhatsApp at +56 9 8475 6735 and we'll help you arrange the activity.

6. Enjoy the local food

A visit to Matanzas is also a chance to try its cafés and restaurants. Start the day with a slow breakfast, take a break after the beach or end the day with a meal by the sea.

A few places to consider:

Opening hours change with the season: ask us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what's open during your stay.

7. Go for a hike and discover the coast

The area around Matanzas has plenty of places to walk, take in the views and find quieter corners.

Combine the lookouts with walks along the coast, or explore hiking routes that match your experience and fitness.

If you'd like to see places like the Arcos de la Polcura, check access, difficulty and trail conditions beforehand. Not every trail has facilities or permanent signage.

How many days should you stay in Matanzas?

A weekend is enough to enjoy the beach, visit a few lookouts, try the local food and add one guided activity.

With three or four days you can add a horse ride, a surf lesson or a day of mountain biking, and explore more of the Navidad district.

The key is not to fill every hour: part of Matanzas's charm is slowing down, enjoying the landscape and resting.

Stay in Matanzas and take it slow

To make the most of the area, choose a place where you can rest comfortably and plan your outings with flexibility.
