Tuesday 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, is a public holiday in Chile. On its own it doesn't make a long weekend, because Monday the 7th is a working day. But if you take that Monday off, you get four days in a row, from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8. It's the last long break before Christmas and a good excuse to head to the coast before summer begins.
The 8 December long weekend: how to plan it
- Saturday 5: leave Santiago early and reach Matanzas in time for lunch.
- Sunday 6 and Monday 7: the days in between, with no rush.
- Tuesday 8: the holiday itself; a long breakfast and back home in the afternoon.
Matanzas is about 160 km from Santiago, roughly 2.5 hours by car. There are also direct buses. All the details are in getting here. If you can, leave on Friday the 4th after work and add one more night.
December on the coast: long days and quiet beaches
In early December the O'Higgins coast already feels like summer, without the January and February crowds. The days are long and the sun sets late, right in front of the terrace. It's the heart of the wind season: kite and windsurf sails fill the sea off Matanzas, Pupuya and Topocalma, a great show from the beach or with a coffee in hand.

Four days, four rhythms
With four days you don't have to choose. One way to spend them:
- Arrive and slow down. Open the big window, walk along the beach and light the grill at sunset.
- An active day. A surf lesson, a horse ride through the dunes or a mountain bike trail through the pines. More ideas in things to do in Matanzas and on Play.
- A slow day. A slow coffee while the beach wakes up, a book on the terrace and the hot tub as the sun goes down.
- Leave without hurrying. A long breakfast, one last walk and back to Santiago after lunch.
